Ghana formerly known as the Gold Coast is one of the most politically stable countries in Africa, because it was the first country south of the Sahara to achieve independence. It has one of the fastest growing and prosperous economies in Africa. The population is a combination of over 40 different ethnic groups. The major ethnic groups in Ghana include the Akan, Ewe, Mole-Dagbane, Guan, and Gadangbe. The subdivisions of each group share a common cultural heritage, history, language, and origin. The population of Ghana is presently estimated at 23 million. The climate is tropical in nature, with an all year temperature between 21-320C or 70-900F. The system of government is parliamentary democracy with a maximum of two four-year terms allotted to the presidency.
Few countries in Africa have an appeal that can compare with the attractions in Ghana. The country is divided into 10 regions, and all these attractions are widely spread throughout these regions. Nature has been generous to Ghana, as few attractions in the world can compare with those in Ghana. To discover Ghana is to discover the natural Africa.
GREATER ACCRA REGION
The region is the smallest of all the regions and a gateway to Ghana. The city of Accra has been the economic and commercial capital since 1877. Accra is the embodiement of fine buildings, reflecting its’ transition from a 19th century colonial settlement to a cosmopolitan African city. The city also offers a wide range of entertainment with a variety of African and international restaurants, night clubs, casinos and bars. The region has a dense population and is the traditional home of the Gadangbe tribe. Some of the attractions in this region are;

EASTERN REGION
The region with its’ capital Koforidua is rich in dramatic landscape, historical and traditional relics. Dominated by the Akosombo dam, the construction of which created the largest man made lake known as the Lake Volta. The region is also blessed with a number cascading waterfalls. Ghana’s only commercial diamond mine at Akwatia is located in this region and boasts of being the birth place of the country’s cocoa industry. There are a number of natural sanctuaries of various species of birds and butterflies.

WESTERN REGION
With the twin-city Sekondi/Takoradi as the regional capital, this is the gateway to Cote d‘Ivoire. The region was one of the earliest to mine for gold and other minerals and still can boast of some of the oldest mines in the country. Discovering the region reveals many of the diverse attractions of Ghana. It also has facilities such as hotels, restaurants and pubs which are all of international standards. Places to visit include:

CENTRAL REGION
Cape Coast, the regional capital was the former seat of the British colonial administration of the Gold Coast until 1877 when it was moved to Accra. The region’s coastline is famous for its ancient forts and castles built by the early Europeans. Three of the region’s forts and castles have been designated as world heritage monuments by UNESCO. The region is also famous for its palm fringed beaches, fascinating fishing villages and historic towns. It also has a rich stock of colourful traditional festivals that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

VOLTA REGION
The most easterly region of Ghana with the capital Ho, bordering on Togo is an area of extraordinary scenic beauty. Its’ rolling hills and valleys, rocky outcrops and overlooking lake Volta, and its’ lagoons and rivers, waterfalls and beaches makes it one of the natures’ most attractive gifts to Ghana. The region stretches from the eastern coastal plains on the Atlantic coast right up to the arid lands of the north. Its festivals and ceremonies reflect the rich diversity of history and cultural life of the indigenous people of the region. The regional museum at Ho is an ideal place to understand the background of our heritage. One of its towns is a centre of herbal medicines.

ASHANTI REGION
The region has the historic city of Kumasi as its capital. It earned the name “the kingdom of gold” for the rich history of its traditional monarchy whose culture was widely coloured in gold, a mineral which is widely mined in the Ashanti Region. Kumasi boasts of the largest open air market in west Africa at Kejetia, and the city is ringed by villages famous for artisans and handicrafts. It is also home to the most important gold mines in Ghana located at Obuasi, 50km south-west of Kumasi. It is a region of unspoilt natural attractions and a place to discover the traditional heartland of Ghana.

BRONG AHAFO REGION
This region is the agricultural or breadbasket of the country. With Sunyani as the regional capital, it boasts of extensive forest reserves and cocoa plantations. The region was home to the Bono Kingdom, the root of all Akan people in Ghana. The region also boasts of some the most colourful traditional festivals which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

NORTHERN REGION
This is the largest region in Ghana and covers an area of 70,390 sq kilometres, constituting 31% of the country’s land mass. Tamale, the regional capital is an important transit point for goods and people transiting through Ghana to Burkina Faso. The population of the region is about two million. The region has about sixteen different ethnic groups and the major ones are the Dagombas, Nanumbas, Gonjas, Mamprusi and Konkombas. There is also a sizeable wildlife population made up of elephants, buck species and warthogs. Below are some places to visit;

UPPER EAST REGION
The administrative capital of this region, Bolgatanga has always been a meeting point for traders from Mali and Burkina Faso on their way south to Tamale and other southern towns of Ghana. It is a region that houses handicrafts including straw hats and baskets. It also has villages with their very distinct architectural styles that have evolved through the generations and are adapted to the local conditions in this region. In terms of accommodation the region boasts of some excellent lower range hotels and lodges.

THE UPPER WEST REGION
The administrative capital for this region is Wa. This town which is deep seated in tradition is the seat of the Wa Na, paramount chief of the Walas, the dominant ethnic group in this region. His magnificent palace still stands as stately as it did when it was first built in the 19th century. The unique styled traditional village houses, of round mud-walled structures connected by walls forming large compounds, are well adapted to the demanding climate of this region.
